Amphibians Breathe With Lungs

Amphibians may breathe with lungs gills or through their skin.

Amphibians breathe with lungs. Directs oxygenated blood to the body and deoxygenated blood to the lungs. About 10 to 25 can be done through the skin. All reptiles breathe through their lungs.

The reptiles lung has a much greater surface area for the exchange of gases than the lungs of amphibians. As long as their skin is moist they can absorb oxygen directly from the air or water through the skin. Like all amphibians toads breathe through their skin as well as with their lungs.

Amphibians are the first true vertebrates with four limbs. Ventilation is accomplished by buccal pumping. These are then closed and the air is forced into the lungs by contraction of the throat.

Most amphibians however are able to exchange gases with the water or air via their skin. Mature frogs breathe mainly with lungs and also exchange gas with the environment through the skin. Amphibians begin their life living underwater breathing through gills and swimming with tails.

Amphibians live on land and in the water. Amphibians have gills when they are young or they breathe through their skin. No matter how big or small the mammal is they always use their lungs to inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.
